Meine Kurse

Ich besuche hier an der SNU insgesamt 4 Kurse und einen Koranisch-Sprachkurs. 2 meiner Kurse werden am CBA (College of Business Administration) unterrichtet, wo auch die meisten Austauschstudenten studieren und es deswegen die grösste Auswahl an Kursen in englischer Unterrichtssprache gibt. Die anderen 2 Kurse besuche ich am College of Social Siences resp. College of Humanities.

Corporate Finance:
"This course aims at understanding market efficiency hypothesis, capital structure, dividend policy and working capital management, which are based on fundamental financial theories including the present value model, capital budgeting, portfolio theory, CAPM and cost of capital. Moreover, this course will provide a simple introduction to corporate financial analysis, financial planning and derivatives."

Der Kurs ist sehr herausfordernd, vor allem wenn man noch nicht viel Finance-Grundlagen hatte. Praktisch jede Woche muss eine Case Study in der Gruppe bearbeitet und präsentiert werden. Daneben gibt es auch ein Finance-Buch zu lesen, mehrere Quizzes und ein Final Exam.

Organizational Behavior:

"This course lets students understand various factors that affect the characteristics and behavior of an organization and its employees. By doing so, students will learn the way to effectively manage individuals, groups, and the organization. Learning the concepts and methods to simultaneously increase the satisfaction of employees and the effectiveness of an organization is the purpose of this course."

Ein typischer BWL-Kurs, bei dem man zwar viel lesen (einen 600-Seiten Wälzer) aber nicht viel überlegen muss. Es geht vor allem um psychologische Erkenntnisse und deren Anwendung auf Verhalten in Unternehmen. Geprüft wird mit Multiple-Choice-Tests und Gruppen-Assignments.

Game Theory an Its Application:
"This course discusses the basic tools of game theory. It examines the basic models of strategic behavior in modern microeconomics. It also builds a framework for the analysis of markets in which traditional price theory fails. Central in development are choices under uncertainty, choices in strategic situations, and choices under asymmetric information. The theories are applied to the analysis of oligopolistic markets, insurance markets, the theory of actions and other applied areas."
Etwa so unverständlich und kompliziert wie nach meiner Ansicht jeder Mikro-Kurs ist. Der Professor hält langweilige Vorlesungen, und verlangt dann von den Studenten, unmöglich schwierige Aufgaben zu lösen. Wie man seine Prüfungen überstehen soll, ist mir momentan noch ein Rätsel...

Asian Philosophies:

"This is an introductory course to Asian Philosophy, designed to teach the philosophical traditions of East Asia in an interesting, easy-to-understand format to lower division undergraduates with varying majors and interests. Topics including the philosophy and culture of India; Buddhism's development through India, China and Korea; Taoist Thought in China; and the rise of Confucianism in China and Korea will be covered. Historical approaches will be paired with subject-centered investigation. While introducing the important textual resources of each philosophy, audio/video resources will be used to help explain the cultural and historical backgrounds for the birth of the Asian philosophical traditions, and their effects on the culture and society of then and now. Each lecture will be conducted with an independent topic."

Diesen Kurs finde ich mit Abstand am spannensten, da man viel über die Kultur, Religion und Philosophie von Asien erfährt. Man muss zwar einiges machen für den Kurs (Literatur, Papers, Gruppenpräsentationen, Quizzes), aber man lernt auch viel dabei.

Koreanisch Niveau I:

Diesen Anfänger-Sprachkurs besuche ich am Language Education Institute (LEI), das zur Uni gehört. Zweimal je 3 Stunden pro Nachmittag versuchen uns die Koreanischlehrerinnen, uns koreanische Zeichen, Vokabeln, Grammatik und Auspracheregeln näherzubringen. Das koreanische Alphabet (Hangul) lernt man sehr schnell, da es sehr wissenschaftlich aufgebaut ist. Alles andere ist aber so schwierig, dass man nur sehr langsam Fortschritte macht. Die paar wenigen Brocken, die man jedoch in diesem Kurs lernt, sind wirklich essentiell um in Korea überleben zu können.
